This project aims to develop a medical device to assess chronic middle ear inflammation in children. For this we collaborate with ENT expert of the Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit.

Chronic middle ear inflammation (Otits Media with Effusion) is a very common state in children and can cause hearing loss persisting up to several months. The diagnosis, understanding and follow up after surgery are neither ideal nor complete. Thus, we aim to develop a diagnostic device to assess the middle ear inflammation to improve the understanding and diagnosis. This device will combine spectroscopic measurements and 3D imaging to enable measurements within the complex structured middle ear. Once the device is designed, long term studies are necessary to proof its functionality and finally to improve the understanding of otits media with effusion.
